Experts face quiz on overhead power lines PDF Print E-mail
Written by Daniel
Monday, 21 July 2008

TDs and Senators are to question Dutch experts who recently gave Energy Minister Eamon Ryan a major report comparing overhead electricity pylons and high-voltage power lines with underground cables.

The Ecofys consultants' study followed strong pressure from TDs and Senators across party lines, as well as a major grassroots campaign in the North East, where EirGrid proposes to build a 110km-long ultra high power line across counties Monaghan, Cavan and Meath.

Next Tuesday, members of the Joint Committee of TDs and Senators dealing with energy policy will quiz the experts at a special session in Leinster House.

Anti-pylon campaigners in the North East claim that the experts' report has endorsed the main arguments they have been fighting on.

They have also pledged to keep up their fight to force the lines underground.

Independent study on electricity transmission infrastructure published PDF Print E-mail

Thursday, 10 July 2008

Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Eamon Ryan TD yesterday published the independent Study on the Comparative Merits of Overhead Electricity Transmission Lines Versus Underground Cables.

The Study was initiated in February of this year following calls from deputies from all sides of the house, particularly those members of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources for an independent study to consider the issues involved with both types of transmission infrastructure.

The study was conducted by international consultants Ecofys and Golder Associates, a global group specialising in ground engineering and environmental services, in partnership with an expert in underground cable technology.

A total of 522 submissions were received and reviewed by the consultants undertaking the report. Current international practice and two hypothetical case studies with route lengths of 100 km and 50 km were examined.

The study examined electricity transmission technoloies, comparisons of technical and economic characteristics, environmental and health impacts, policy implications and costs. The study was not project specific and was designed to inform decisions on transmission infrastructure generally.

Fresh plea over Hill of Tara PDF Print E-mail

Friday, 04 July 2008

Campaigners opposed to the M3 motorway being routed through the Hill of Tara have urged world archaeological leaders to call for a halt to its construction.

The impact of the controversial road through Co Meath was discussed at the Sixth World Archaeological Congress (WAC) being held in University College Dublin. The non-governmental group - which is the only archaeological organisation with elected global representation - holds an international convention every four years.

Several organisations including TaraWatch, the Meath Archaeological and Historical Society and the National Roads Authority as well as government officials and academics argued for and against the motorway route.

Advisors single out route for Eirgrid pylons PDF Print E-mail

Power company EirGrid is insisting that reports published by it this week indicating an emerging preferred route for its 400kV power line across the county is simply a recommendation from consultants and is not an announcement of the chosen route.

On Monday, the company published a number of reports assessing the Meath-Cavan routes, the Cavan-Tyrone routes, and an assessment of overground versus underground options, as well as the planning context and a report on the public consultation process to date.

According toww the consultants, option 3 is the emerging preferred route, which traverses a number of parishes through central Meath....

....Option 3A runs past Carlanstown and Togherstown, and 3B close to Nobber. The two line options join together in the townland of Altmush and run past Kilmainhamwood towards the proposed sub-station study area.
