Trim to host major debate on suicide awareness - 12th April PDF Print E-mail
Written by Daniel
Monday, 14 April 2008

At a time when an average of 447 people die by suicide each year in Ireland, the Awareness Education Office in collaboration with Meath Charity Truck Convoy are hosting a public seminar on suicide awareness in Scoil Mhuire, Trim.
The event is being organised by Dunboyne brothers Gary and Thomas Cannon who lost their father through suicide in 1997. At a very difficult time, the brothers found that attending the Awareness Education Office`s seminar `Facing up to suicide` helped them to understand more about suicide and come to terms with their loss.
Thomas and Gary wanted to give something back to the charity and are both volunteers with the Awareness Education Office. For the past two years, they have raised funds for the charity by organising an annual truck convoy through Meath. Thanks to the funds raised, the Facing Up To Suicide seminar will be held in Trim on 12th April and all those who have been affected by suicide or who wish to understand more about it are invited to attend.

OPW in move to remove Hill of Tara squatters PDF Print E-mail
Written by Daniel
Monday, 14 April 2008
The Office of Public Works (OPW) has served a formal notice to quit on what it has described as `squatters` on the Hill of Tara this week.
Minister of State at the OPW, Noel Ahern, has told Meath East TD Thomas Byrne the move is being made in response to concerns of local people that damage was being done to the hill by M3 motorway protestors living in camps there.
Mr Ahern said that the OPW had "become increasingly concerned at the proliferation of squatters on the Hill of Tara, and particularly at the increase in tents and other shelters which have been placed on the monument and its immediate surroundings".
Mr Ahern said that fires are lit regularly and heavy timbers are being brought onto the site. "All of this activity is damaging to the surface of the national monument and its unique features," Mr Ahern added in a letter to Meath East TD, Deputy Thomas Byrne.
"We have been endeavouring to persuade the people concerned that they should stop their activities and leave the site, but, so far, to no avail," he added.

Dunboyne Train by 2010 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Daniel
Monday, 03 March 2008
Meath commuters can expect to be boarding a train into Dublin by 2010 after planning permission was granted on Friday for the Clonsilla-Dunboyne line.

In the first decision made under a new fast-track process, An Bord Pleanala gave permission, subject to 13 conditions, which will allow Iarnrod Eireann to begin construction by the end of the year.

The 7.5km line will allow commuters to travel from Dunboyne to the city centre in 33 minutes, avoiding the gridlock that plagues Meath commuters.

A park-and-ride facility for 1,200 cars will also be built at Pace, north of Dunboyne, which will caters for commuters from all over the county.

Yesterday Iarnrod Eireann welcomed the decision, saying it was part of the "most significant expansion" of the country's rail network in 100 years.

The plans include a fully-accessible station at Dunboyne with car parking for up to 400 vehicles, with trains into the city centre every 15 minutes at peak times.

Trains will travel from Dunboyne to Clonsilla and continue along the existing commuter line to the city centre, and the line could be upgraded to a DART service if required.

Each train will take 1,200 commuters into the city, or 4,800 commuters per hour at peak times.
